Welcome to Our Gzhel Teapots and Tea Sets
There is a group of about thirty villages located not far from Moscow bearing the name of Gzhel, which has long been famous for its clay. The origin of this name is connected with the verb zhech - 'to fire, to burn'. The place has always been a center of folk pottery and has played an important part in the development of Russian ceramic arts.
Today the workshops in the Gzhel region produce several thousand different items. Each piece of porcelain and ceramic is painted entirely by hand with additional hours of hand work required to mold, finish, glaze and fire each individual piece. The result is a functional work of art.
Many of the Artists working in Gzhel today are descended from generations of local craftsmen. Children showing artistic talents are encouraged from an early age and many of these children will continue artistic studies through college. They are then ready to take positions as artists within the Gzhel Association of Porcelain Manufacture.
We are pleased to offer some of their wonderful tea ware and kvass jugs.
